Yahoo UK Users Receive New Mail Beta

By David A. Utter

The vaunted Yahoo Mail update has been rolled out to its UK users as part of a wider beta test of the service's new functionality.

A limited beta of Yahoo Mail invited only a small number of testers to try out the features Yahoo planned to make a regular piece of the product. Pocket-lint reported this beta has expanded to invite Yahoo's UK and Ireland users.

The overhaul incorporates much of the technology Yahoo acquired when it bought web-based email company Oddpost in 2004. Yahoo began testing the new email features in June 2005 with its initial beta testers.

At the time, a Yahoo spokesperson said, "This new version that will go into beta this summer is a complete overhaul of the UI and is the most dramatic update to the service yet."

That update includes incorporating a RSS feed reader into Yahoo Mail, and adding drag and drop functionality for users to move messages from place to place as they can in Microsoft Outlook. Another Outlook-like feature, the preview pane, displays the contents of a selected message.

The new service also works a lot faster, the article said, with speedier connection speeds from Yahoo's servers. Users of Yahoo Mail in the UK and Ireland can switch between the existing Mail interface and the new one. Yahoo plans to keep the current mail interface available.
